Our Impact Remains

Over the last 12 years, Project Yoga Richmond has built an extraordinary community rooted in the belief that yoga and mindfulness practices should be accessible to everyone. You have played an important role in bringing this mission to life, whether through participation in classes, events and workshops, spreading the word, or supporting our work with donations of time and money.

With your help, PYR has reached thousands of people through outreach programs, such as trauma-informed yoga, yoga for recovery, and specific classes for children and seniors. Donor funding and pay-what-you-can classes allowed us to offer these programs for free or at a reduced cost, while still supporting our dedicated staff and the talented ambassadors you know and love.

We’re proud of the community we’ve created, and we have worked to adapt the PYR operating model and strategic focus to the ever-changing times. However, the Covid-19 pandemic, on top of existing economic constraints, have made it challenging to fulfill our mission. For the last few years we have lived the yogic practice of aparigraha, of non-attachment, as we shifted course time and again, offering virtual classes, an on-demand video studio, and special events. As the pandemic eased, we launched new weekly classes across the city.

But it wasn’t enough. After weathering a steep decline in both attendance and donations over the last two years, we have made the very difficult decision to gently close our doors.

Taking care of our valued staff and ambassadors is among our highest priorities. We will continue to support them throughout our wind-down process and as they transition to their next steps.

Many of our ambassadors are active teachers across the Richmond area, and we encourage you to continue practicing with them if you are able. We will soon have a page on our website with more information about their teaching schedules.

Over the years, countless people have found their way to PYR and we are honored to have played a role in creating a community rooted in the practices of yoga and mindfulness. We hope that the many seeds planted by Project Yoga Richmond will continue to nourish the people of this city for years to come.

With our deepest gratitude,

The Project Yoga Richmond Board of Directors
